FIELD HOCKEY TRY-OUTS FALL 2017 – JULY 31 – AUGUST 4, 6:00-7:30am @ the MHS Turf
Please plan to be at the turf 15 minutes early to check-in and get ready to start promptly AT 6:00am.

YOU MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING TO PARTICIPATE:

an up-to-date physical on file with the athletic office, sneakers, stick, mouth guard, FULL water bottle or two, shin guards, and goggles

WE WILL CHECK THAT YOU HAVE THESE AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH DAY.  IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY OF THESE ITEMS YOU WILL HAVE AN OBSERVATIONAL PRACTICE AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE FOR SAFETY AND HEALTH REASONS.

Important information on our try-outs policy (reminder for some, new business for others):

Try-outs for both the JV and Varsity Monticello field hockey teams have been and will always be MANDATORY for all prospective and returning players without exception. This means that each interested player must come fully prepared to the entire week of try-outs for the full duration of practice. Field hockey try-outs have always been the first week of August so interested players must plan accordingly. Any scheduling conflicts must be brought to Coach Martin no later than June 1 for alternative try-out consideration.

A note for players going out for Varsity:

The job of the Varsity coach is to assemble the most competitive team possible. There are 15 spots on the Varsity roster. At the beginning of each new season, this roster is considered empty and will be filled by the top 15 players regardless of age or legacy with the program. These decisions (including the expansion of the roster) are made by Coach Martin with input from the coaching staff and are made objectively based on each individual’s skill level, coachability (how well they respond to and implement coaching), and their attitude regarding practice and teamwork. REMEMBER: mile time neither guarantees a spot on Varsity nor excludes a player from a roster spot, however, each individual coming out should be averaging an 8 minute mile or less. Mile time WILL be taken into account in the decision making process. We encourage Freshmen and Sophomores thinking about Varsity to give it a shot since they still have the opportunity to play on JV if they choose to do so.

Additionally, Monticello Field Hockey is taking a turn for the more competitive this year. As such, we encourage all of you that are serious about field hockey and wanting to come out competitive to try-outs to get their sticks in their hands as much as possible in the off-season. Get yourselves in shape so we don’t have to focus so much on conditioning and fine tune your skills so we can hit the ground running on strategy. This is the year the Mustangs go well into the post-season and we as coaches are expecting our players to be up to the challenge. Remember, if you want to be an integral part of the Varsity squad and get a lot of playing time, it is on you to show us that you’ve got the focus and determination to do so.
Go Mustangs!
