Monticello High School’s athletic department is pleased to announce David Rivera as the Head Boys Soccer Coach. Rivera, a 2008 graduate of Monticello, most recently served as an assistant coach on last year’s varsity coaching staff that guided the Mustangs to an 8-win season – an improvement of six wins over the previous season.
“I’m focused on cultivating our hard working and focused student-athletes with an emphasis on teamwork and perseverance. We will foster a culture of good sportsmanship, cooperation and responsibility, and I look forward to motivating and encouraging our students to do their best.” – David Rivera
“I am excited to welcome a Monticello Mustang as the leader of this program for which he has served as both a student-athlete and as an assistant coach. His passion and desire for the success of our students – not just on the field, but as students, future employees and community leaders – was evident in the interview process and will both strengthen our soccer program and support our athletic department’s efforts to inspire student success.” – Matthew Pearman, Director of Athletics
Assisting Rivera at the varsity level will be Susan Weirich, who joins the Mustangs coaching staff with over a decade of coaching experience at various levels, most recently with the Richmond Strikers following a collegiate playing career at Ferrum College where she was the 2000 Coaches Award recipient. Returning as the junior varsity head coach for 2018 is veteran Yax Lacy, in his second season with the boys program following a successful run as an assistant coach in the Monticello Girls Soccer program.
