Five Monticello High School seniors celebrated their college decisions in a ceremonial signing this afternoon. Noted at the ceremony was that while the athletic accolades were many, these five students combine for a 4.133 cumulative Grade Point Average – STUDENT-athletes all.
Austin Haverstrom, Football – University of Delaware
Austin was a three-year starter for Monticello at both Wide Receiver and Defensive Back. For his career, Austin totaled 85 receptions for 1,336 yards and 11 touchdowns, averaging 15.7 yards per reception. As a senior, Austin led the Mustangs with 39 receptions for 662 yards and 5 touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, Austin had 5 career interceptions.
As a senior, Austin earned 1st team all-Jefferson District and 1st team all-Region 3C honors, and was a 2nd team Group 3A all-state selection. A multi-talented student-athlete, Austin is a midfielder on the Mustangs’ Boys Lacrosse team as well as a member of the Monticello Jazz Band.
Kevin Jarrell, Football – College of William & Mary
Kevin has started every game at quarterback for Monticello since mid-way through his freshman season, 37 games in all. In that time, Kevin posted school records in career passing yards (5,594) and career total offense (8,482 yards). His senior year alone, Kevin led the Mustangs in rushing, passing, and scoring – completing the year with 1,638 rushing yards, 1,875 passing yards, 33 rushing touchdowns, and 16 passing touchdowns – guiding Monticello’s offense to the third most points scored per game (42.5) in Mustangs’ football history.
As a senior, Kevin’s postseason honors were many… 1st team all-Jefferson District, 1st team all-Region 3C, Jefferson District Offensive Player of the Year, Central Virginia Offensive Player of the Year, and 2nd team Group 3A all-state. Also a starter on Monticello’s baseball team and a formerly a varsity basketball team member as well, Kevin is also involved in the community as a volunteer mentor for elementary and middle school students.
Garrett Porterfield, Football – Glenville State College
Garrett was a three-year year starter at linebacker for the Mustangs. For his career, ‘Porty’ totaled 376 tackles including 90 tackles for a loss (a school career record), 2 forced fumbles, 4 fumble recoveries, 26 sacks, 5 pass breakups and 1 interception. As a senior, Garrett led the defense with 163 tackles, 45 tackles for a loss, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, 1 interception and 13 sacks.
As a senior, Garrett earned 1st team all-Jefferson District and 1st team all-Region 3C honors, and was a 1st team Group 3A all-state selection at linebacker.
Ellie Wray, Girls Soccer – Tusculum College
Ellie has been a four-year varsity starter at attack or outside midfielder for the Mustangs. With her senior season still to come this spring, Ellie has earned 2nd team all-Jefferson District and 2nd team all Conference 29 honors, along with being selected as the 2016 Monticello Team Commitment Award winner. A team captain for the Mustangs, Ellie has also played for multiple club soccer teams including the current SOCA U19 Elite.

Whenever the team needs someone to show rather than tell, they need to look no further than Ellie. It has been a privilege to coach her these 4 years in both high school and club, and I look forward to seeing her be successful in her future endeavors at Tusculum.”
Mallory Yowell, Girls Soccer – Lynchburg College
Mallory is entering her fourth year as a starter at center back for the Mustangs. Accolades have been aplenty for Mallory, including 2nd team all-Conference 29 and the Monticello Team Commitment Award in 2015 and 1st team all-Conference 29 in 2016. In 2017, Mallory earned 1st team all-Conference 29, 1st team all-Central Virginia, and Honorable Mention all-Region 3A West honors. A team captain for the Mustangs, Mallory also currently plays for the SOCA U19 Elite.
Monticello Head Coach Thomas Warren… “Mallory is the emotional leader of the team. Whenever the group needs a pick-me-up, Mal is the one to deliver. She has proven herself one of the most dominant center backs in the area, and I feel privileged to have coached her for six combined seasons of high school and club soccer. She will be a great asset to the community of Lynchburg College as a leader and player.”
